Acupuncture is a system of healing that has been practised in China and other Eastern Countries for thousands of years. Since the 1960’s the popularity of acupuncture in the West has increased dramatically.
Acupuncture is not simply a pain relief technique. By inserting fine needles into appropriate acupuncture points, they both stimulate the local healing response and mobilise messenger chemicals from the brain, to kick start repair.
Many people are put off acupuncture by the idea of needles but these needles bear little resemblance to those used for injections or blood tests. They are much finer, in fact not much more than the width of a hair, and are inserted quickly and painlessly. They are then left in place for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Generally during treatment you will have little awareness that there is a needle in place. Some heat around the needle may be used to help stimulate the area. In some cases of lower back or hip pain, electro-acupuncture is effective. For this the needles are stimulated to gently vibrate, which can benefit large areas of muscular pain.
It is quite common to walk away from the treatment and initially feel no benefit. The effects are not usually evident for six to twenty four hours.
The number of appointments needed varies from person to person but some positive response to treatment can be expected within four sessions.
