Currently osteopathy is recommended by the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the effective treatment and management of non-specific low back pain. If you have had symptoms for more than six weeks, NICE advises that your GP should make you aware of osteopathy as a treatment option.
Lower back pain can be debilitating and very distressing. Sometimes pain strikes completely out of the blue but more often it begins with a sense of stiffness that increasingly interferes with day-to-day activity over time. Symptoms can vary from sharp, acute pain and spasm to a more chronic dull ache or stiffness. A number of different structures in the lower back can be responsible for causing these symptoms, including the muscles, nerves, discs and joints. Furthermore, hips and knees may be the root cause of the problem. For example, if you are not bending through your knees terribly well, you are bound to over-exert your lower back.
The key to my approach is working with the individual at the time of presentation. Back pain is often challenging and there is not one rule that fits all. Firstly, it is essential to establish the specific tissues causing the symptoms and how the situation has arisen, be it from a build up of habits or an acute overstrain. Following diagnosis, I can put together a package of measures to help alleviate the pain and begin to encourage a return to full mobility.
Osteopathy, massage and acupuncture can be highly effective in helping to relieve the pressure on the nerves, muscles and joints causing the pain. Combining gentle, soft tissue massage, stretching techniques and joint mobilisation, together with appropriate exercises, helps restore normal movement which allows the body to help itself back to full recovery.
