About

Although I’ve been an osteopath for more than 30 years, I still enjoy seeing patients get back to the important things in life.

As a self-employed osteopath with over 30 years’ experience, I understand the pressures of making a speedy recovery and the need to return to normal life as quickly as possible.

My key motivation is to help patients on a day-to-day basis. I still get huge satisfaction from seeing someone complete their first half marathon when they thought injury would stop them in their tracks and, equally, helping a 75-year-old lady go back to playing golf after a fall had confined her to sitting at home.

Background

On qualifying from the British School of Osteopathy in 1986, I gained experience working in a number of practices around the Midlands. In 1988, I took the leap to becoming self-employed by setting up my own practice in Bridgnorth and, more recently, I started a practice together with colleagues in Shrewsbury.

Keen to extend my training, I studied Traditional Chinese Acupuncture for three years at the British College of Acupuncture. Qualifying in 1993, I have successfully combined the two therapies ever since.

My core belief is the need to look at the integration of movement patterns rather than fixed controlled movements. If you are consciously trying to squeeze or contract a muscle, it is already too late.

Professional Development

I have an ongoing thirst for knowledge, always striving to be a more effective practitioner. I continue to do many courses for more in-depth, long-term learning.

This includes the treatment approach to chronic long-term pain from a team in Australia called Permission to Move, and Functional Movement Systems inspired by the Gray Institute in America.

Personal Life

On a personal level, I pack a lot in! I run regularly with Bridgnorth Running Club and Mercia Fell Runners, swim with Northgate Swim Club, as well as enjoying mountain and road cycling when time and weather permit at weekends.

I always have a number of DIY projects on the go and although not currently in a band, I play the saxophone in those odd moments between work and fitness.

“I have used Hugh for many years and cannot recommend him highly enough. His magic fingers work little miracles. He is a good listener and counsellor, includes Pilates exercises. Could not wish for a better osteopath.”
